In response to the cold and often dreary weather of late, a bright, happy quilt seemed to be in order. When I began my quilting adventure in early 2012 I had very little color and pattern selection confidence (an area still needing improvement in my repertoire). I tended to purchase a lot of fabric lines for a project and trust that the designer would educate me. The first fat quarter bundle to come home was Good Fortune by Kate Spain. As it has a special place in my quilting memories, it has been sitting on the shelf waiting for the right project.
I think I found the right project. I am sure you have seen the Penny Patch Quilt-Along by Rachel at Stitched in Color and all the lovely finished quilts that have been appearing in blogs and on Flickr. I bravely untied the FQ bundle and pulled out some Kona white, ash and pansy.
It was a lovely Sunday afternoon cutting this up to yield these piles.
Over a few nights, I had completed 60 4-Penny Patch blocks. It makes me happy to see how little trimming was needed.
Now, I had 120 6.5" blocks to arrange.
Using my design floor, and after playing for a couple of hours with block placement, I think this will work fine.
What do you know, the primary color just happens to be orchid. How very trendy of me!

I am loving this quilt. The fabric you selected is perfect. Purple is my favorite color, and your design floor is working well. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, Kathy! What a pleasure to see those gorgeous prints go from bundle to quilt layout! It is difficult to cut into the bundle, but sew worth it. Your top is gorgeous. Looks like spring!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that this would work perfectly for the Radiant Orchid competition/link-up too :-)
ReplyDeleteIt will be a great finish.
Oh yes, Kathy! Works for me - hadn't seen this design ... Very nice and your fabrics are delightful :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I like all the cool colors.
ReplyDeleteOh, Kathy, it's gorgeous! I am loving the lovely shades of orchid and blues with the occasional pop of orange. Well done to choose such a great pattern to showcase the fabrics!

ReplyDeleteI love the orchid color. What a fresh, lovely quilt. I am visiting from Let's Bee Social.
ReplyDeleteWonderful colors and getting all those blocks made! I tend to stick with wallhangings and baby blankets. I haven't had the courage to make a large quilt yet.
ReplyDeletethis is just beautiful :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteNothing like Kate to brighten up a winter's day/night!!!! Your quilt will be lovely...I just saw the Penny patch along just the other day:) and yes, too, too trendy :)
ReplyDeleteOh, beautiful! That's going to be a lovely, lovely Penny Patch. I'm so glad you found each other =)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thoughtful and wise comment on my post "just thinking" the other day. These are the sentiments that need to be spread about more often. Or at least, I need reminders/affirmation about it now and then =)
How beautiful! Also, how inspiring that you pulled this together so quickly (although I am not discounting the effort and work involved!)

Gorgeous! I love the addition of the solids... that pansy just stands out (in a great way!).
ReplyDeleteThis looks beautiful! This line looks like it was meant to be made into a Penny Patch. Definitely a shot of loveliness to get you though the winter.
