Vintage Modern Quilt Top Finish and a Question

Happy Friday!  Thanks to my husband's need to recuperate from surgery, I have been able to spend some quality time in my sewing room.  I have another quilt top to add to the queue on the rack waiting to be quilted!  It started with a jelly roll of the lovely Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille and this pattern from Lee at Freshly Pieced that I found at the Moda Bakeshop.

I decided not to add the borders to simplify the look.  Please note and admire the feet of my stand-in quilt holder!  As my usual assistant for this was not available, I enlisted my very tall oldest son for this important responsibility.
Azaleas in bloom to accompany this quilt top.
I do love the mix of patterns and colors in this collection!  I did have one on-going issue with this quilt relating to the use of the pre-cut 2.5" strips.  It seems to me that the strips are not exactly 2.5" from edge to edge...see my evidence below (apologize for the blurry close ups):

....just enough off to make a difference.  I have signed up for the Craftsy class with Camille Roskelley on using pre-cuts and hopefully I will figure out what I am doing wrong!  How do you work with pre-cuts to ensure precise piecing?

Today is the first day of the Bloggers Quilt Festival and I am seriously considering entering a quilt...WHAT?!  Stay tuned for more craziness...

In the mean time...it's Friday at crazy mom quilts.  Have a lovely weekend!

  2. I love it! The fabric and pattern both are fabulous! I often have that same problem with precuts but I have no solution for you. If they were uniformly off then it would be less of a problem but they all seem to be a different slightly off.

  3. I loved Camille's Crafty class! So much so that I have her new book on order.

  4. Your top is just lovely! I've gotten wonky pre-cut pieces too. It's tricky to know what to do - shaving off a bit is a pain and when they're a little small there's really no fix. Hope you find the solution.

  8. I love this quilt and I can SO relate to the inaccuracy of precuts. I was using charm squares for a quilt and wondered why my rows weren't matching up so I started checking my charms I had left from that pack and some of them were 5" and a lot were 5 1/4"! I wrote to the manufacturer and asked why there was such a difference. They did answer my email quickly but were unable to give me an answer. They sent me 2 replacement packs though.

I suspect that happens a great deal more than we realize with precuts. I kept thinking that I couldn't be that far off when I'm sewing a 1/4". I was glad it wasn't MY error...LOL

Be sure to let us know what the solution is with those "pinked" edges.

  10. also, regarding the precuts- I have a ruler sticker on my sewing cabinet, so if I come across two pieces that aren't exact, I can measure really quickly and sew correctly. When I come to the end of the row, or finish the block, I trim off any excess. hope this helps! :)
