WIP Wednesday: Starting Tula's City Sampler

I did it.  I finally cut into my collection of Tula Pink  fabrics.  This is my starting point:  a full FQ bundle of Acacia, a pile of lovely scraps from many collections, some solids, and cuts of fabric I've found here and there.
This is the result of sorting the fabrics by color.

Confirms what I always suspected about my color preferences.  Heavy on cool colors, light on the warms.

Seems like I need to buy more fabric in warm colors to balance things out a bit!

I started with the first block...

and kept going.

I skipped a few blocks as I just didn't "feel" the right fabric combinations.

This block is my favorite so far.

Really, believe me when I tell you that each and every piece of this fabric is beautiful.  Like this one...

Do you see the little mice?  I will have to find a reason to pair this up with Lizzy House's Cat Nap!

It occurred to me that I should have a plan for this quilt.  That would make sense.  Even be smart.  However, after enjoying all the beautiful finished quilt tops in the City Sampler Sew Along, I feel confident that the combination of Tula's beautiful fabrics with her interesting blocks will yield something I can work with in the end.  I have decided to, uncharacteristically, free style this by making each block one by one.  If I am happy with each block, I will be happy with the combination.  Stay tuned!

  2. Wow! I love it all - you are off to a great start. What did you mean "free style" it? Not follow Tula's fabric/color choices?

  6. With your obvious affinity with water, you probably come by your preference for cool colours quite honestly! What a fun project. :)

  9. OH kathy -- these are looking great. I keep seeing the samplers around and i am trying hard to resist the urge to jump in on this one. I have a sampler quilt that I keep putting off finishing the blocks for -- so perhapse when I finish that one I can allow myself to think about starting this one.
